What is Paranoid Personality Disorder?
People with paranoid personality disorder are often characterized by being suspicious of other. A person with paranoid personality disorder will almost always believe that people around them are trying to harm or deceive them, even if they have no proof to support their assumptions. I assume everyone has some degree of paranoia about certain situation such as worry about… but people with paranoid personality disorder take this to an extreme and it affects their life and have problems to get along with others in. It affects every relationship they have.
Their extreme suspiciousness may be expressed in confrontational, reserved or by being quiet. They appear to be cold and it is because that’s the way they act when they feel potential threats so they act in a guarded manner. People with Paranoid Personality Disorder tend to lack trust in others so they have a strong need to be independent and to have control over those around them. They have aloud of trouble collaborated with people and they don’t take criticism well from others. They are as well very stubborn.
Symptoms
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder describe this mental illness as a pervasive distrust and suspiouseness of their surroundings. They immediatly assume that other people will exploit, harm, or decieve them. This suspiousness is a huge part of their rutin daily, they might feel their bestfriend is planing on plotting against them or even that their teacher is showing hatred toward them for no reason. Any type of examination (job interview or applying or a loan) would probably be viewed as prying wich limits their ability to function in life.
This individuals has a hard time sharing personal information to their friend because they are afraid that anything they say can be used against them.
Grudges, insults, slights is something this individuals can't get over.
Their respond is often out of proportion to the perceived slight. A minor slight will evoke major anger that last for a long period. They are quick to counterattack and react with anger to percieved insults.
Criteria
- suspects, without sufficient basis, that others are exploiting, harming, or deceiving him or her;
- is preoccupied with unjustified doubts about the loyalty or trustworthiness of friends or associates;
- is reluctant to confide in others because of unwarranted fear that the information will be used maliciously against him or her;
- reads hidden demeaning or threatening meanings into benign remarks or events;
- persistently bears grudges, i.e., is unforgiving of insults , injuries, or slights perceives attacks on his or her character or reputation that are not apparent to others and is quick to react angrily or to counterattack;
- has recurrent suspicions, without justification, regarding fidelity of spouse or sexual partner.
Paranoid personality disorder is more likely to occur on males than females, and occurs between 0,5 and 2,5 percent in the general population.
Diagnose
Personality disorders are diagnosed by a professional as a psychologist. It has to be diagnosed by someone that is trained to make this type of psychological diagnosis. You can not test someone with blood or genetic tests for paranoia. The professional compares the symptoms to make a determination whether your symptoms meet the criteria for a personality Disorder.
Many people with Paranoid PD don’t look out for treatment until the disorder interfere their life. As with all personality disorder you have to be over 18 to be diagnosed.

So what causes Paranoid PD. There seems to be genetic, social and environmental factors. But a bad experience in the past seems to be the root causes of the paranoid personality. If a chid grew up with drugs around them or witnessed something negatively, then that could cause the child to be hypersensitivity in the future. Researches today don’t really know what cases paranoid disorder. However professionals think that no single factor is responsible rather all factors together that is important.
As with the rarest personality disorders psychotheraphy is the treatment of choice. People suffering from paranoia however seldom present themselves for treatment. It should'nt come as a chock then that there has been little research to suggest which types of treatment are most effective toward this disorder.
Treatment of this personality disorder often involves long-term psychotherapy with a therapist that has pleanty of background knowledge of the illness. Medications may also be prescribed to provide assistens with specific troubling and delibilitating symptoms.
